Lengthy, theatrical trailer for the 1940 Universal western serial, WINNERS OF THE WEST, starring Dick Foran, Anne Nagel, James Craig and Harry Woods. This better-than-average cowboy cliffhanger perhaps drew its inspiration from the success of Ceceil B. DeMille's UNION PACIFIC (1939), telling the story of two-fisted troubleshooter, Jeff Ramsey (Dick Foran) and the attempts of The Hartford Transcontinental Railroad's to advance its tracks through Hellgate Pass, a frontier fiefdom controlled by town boss, King Carter (Harry Woods). Universal assembled a competent cast of studio players including Foran, Woods, Anne Nagel, James Craig, Tom Fadden and Charles Stevens, cobbled their scenes with ample footage taken from previous Johnny Mack Brown and Buck Jones chapterplays and tied up with ample use of excerpts from the memorable score from DESTRY RIDES AGAIN for an enjoyable 13 episode cliffhanger. Theatrical trailer for the 1953 Rex Allen western, IRON MOUNTAIN TRAIL. The growth of television and rising costs had, by the early 1950s, diminished the profitability prospects of the "B" western, that, by 1955, all studios, including Republic Pictures, ceased producing series westerns. The economies are evident in IRON MOUNTAIN TRAIL as the more actionful moments are provided by stock footage from previous Republic westerns and serials, including THE GOLDEN STALLION (1949) and THE ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER (1940). The last of the screen's singing cowboys, Rex Allen, nonetheless, made a favorable impression on moviegoers despite the shrinking westers market, starring in 16 well-made oaters for Republic between 1950 and 1953, the best of which were directed by William Witney. The last six films in the series, produced with an eye toward future television sales, curtailed their running times to an hour or less from their previous seven reel lengths. Much to the chagrin of the fans of "The Arizona Cowboy", even the songs were eliminated as a cost-cutting measure. Theatrical trailer for the 1949 Jimmy Wakely western, ACROSS THE RIO GRANDE. Oklahoma-born Wakely, one of the screen's last singing cowboys, had a long career in performing, recording and radio before trekking to Hollwyood with his band -- known at various times as " Jimmy wakely and his Rough Riders", the "Jimmy Wakely Trio" and Jimmy Wakely and his Saddle Pals" -- and providing the musical interludes for such cinema cowboys as Roy Rogers, Don" Red" Barry, Charles Starrett and others. In 1944, he signed with Monogram for a series of muiscal westerns that proved popular with fans of the genre and ran for over two dozen entries and ended in 1949. Theatrical trailer for the last serial produced in Hollywood, Columbia Picture's BLAZING THE OVERLAND TRAIL. Rising production costs and television's ever-growing popularity, doomed the serial and short subject market by the mid-1950s. Columbia Pictures barely outlasted rival cliffhanger producer, Republic Pictures, releasing its final chapterplay in 1956. Republic had ceased serial shooting in 1955 with KING OF THE CARNIVAL. BLAZING THE OVERLAND TRAIL was constructed largely around stock footage from two previous, well-produced serials, WHITE EAGLE (1941)starring Buck Jones and OVERLAND WITH KIT CARSON with "Wild Bill" Elliott. Star Lee Roberts was costumed in buckskin to match the Jones footage, while Dennis Moore -- a prolific actor who had previously starred in four additional cliffhangers -- wore an outfit similar to Elliott for the same reason. Re-release trailer for the 1942 Roy Rogers western, SONS OF THE PIONEERS. By 1942, Roy Rogers, since his starring debut for Republic Pictures in 1938's UNDER WESTERN STARS, was then among the top ten cowboy stars, rivalling the studio's number one attraction, Gene Autry. Previously, Rogers had been starred with popular sidekick, George "Gabby" Hayes in "historical" westerns, usually under and hour running time, whose events were set in the 1800s, while Autry flourished in mostly "modern" westerns which transpired in a contemporary fantasyland where traditional frontier settings were combined with the likes of airplanes, posh night clubs and urban gangsters. With 1941's RED RIVER VALLEY -- a remake of an earlier Autry vehicle of the same title -- Roy was elevated to "modern" westerns. He also was re-teamed with The Sons of the Pioneers, one of the most of all western vocal groups and which Roy had been an original member. The Rogers films of this period are among the best of Roy's career. Well-written, speedy oaters with just the perfect balance of action and song.
